In Case You've Ever Wondered If Chickens Have Feelings

More years ago that I can believe, we bought a small flock of chickens - a nice rooster and a few hens. These chickens were a few years old and had lived in a chicken "tractor" their whole lives.

While they were frequently rolled from new spot to new spot and were definitely happier than chickens living in cages, when they got to our farm, able to roam free...boy, it was a chicken party! They quickly became known as The Adventure Chickens.

Two of the original Adventure Chickens remain. And probably after today, only one. The fat bottomed, feathered legged, fancy colored hen is not well. And at at least 10 years of age, it's not a shock, but still sad.

I've moved her into warm, sunny spots throughout the day and everywhere she's gone, her old friend has followed. Sometimes napping.

Sometimes just standing by.

And sometimes actually standing over her.

Don't ever wonder.

We have just two chickens left from our original flock. Whenever we lose one of these originals, it is sad. Maybe because they were first and my daughter named them all -- and now she's off in the big wide world. And they do form friendships. I've seen it too.

Aw.

Sending good thoughts to you all. I never thought of chicken friendships, but I send good thoughts to the faithful friend.

That is so incredibly sweet... and sad.

I'm so glad these chickens have been able to live out their lives with you and Saint Tim. It does not get any better than that. Isn't 10 years very old for a chicken? A testament to your care.

I hope she rallies.

Of course they have feelings. :( Poor thing. I'm sorry she's loosing her friend.

I'm sorry. What a great chicken life she will have had with you. I hope the remaining AC will bond with one of the younger ones. She's a very loyal chicken - I hope she doesn't pine when this old girl goes.

How sensitive your insight into these two chickens. Their friendship is tied with heartstrings. I glad you were able to capture it.

How wonderful for the ailing chicken to have the comfort and support of her old friend. My heart breaks for the one who will be left behind.

I love how tuned in to your animals you are.

Oh my. You have made me take a look at my own flock and I will watch them more closely.
This is so sweet. Maybe they do understand that they are the last of the adventurers... standing together and watching over each other.
This is a dear tribute to these hens.

I never thought I would cry over chickens (I am mad at mine at the moment. They ate a whole flat of new cabbage plants) but that is so sweet and so sad at the same time. I hope the old gal makes it awhile longer. What great friends they must be. Just breaks my heart.

OH, that is touching, sweet and sad all at once. I know that chickens and everything else in this world has feelings. And you teach others how to 'see' those feelings.
