Not A Creature Was Stirring...Except The Mouse

As anyone who's lived in the country knows, every fall, mice try to move into your house.  In the past, Betsy has taken care of this situation.  This year?  We had evidence of a mouse in the basement.  A mouse chewed a hole through the pantry wall.  A mouse got inside our oven.  It's been ridiculous.

Thanks, Betsy.

So, a couple of weekends ago Tim tore out the entire pantry, cleaned up the mess and rebuilt it with heavier duty walls.  The oven?  He tried to take it apart to see if it could be cleaned out.  We had to order a new oven.  It finally arrived this past week.

In the middle of all this I was decorating for Christmas.

My dad spent a good effort this fall trying to talk me into taking some/all of my mother's Christmas decorations, specifically ornaments.  Our small tree is so full that I have several branches carrying two ornaments apiece, so I stood fast on No Ornaments.  I did ask for the Nativity scene though and he brought that down.

As I carefully unpacked each each character I found Mary, Joseph, the Three Wise Men, Baby Jesus...and then something that felt different.  I unwrapped...an ornament.  It was a mouse.  Oh for crying out loud.

A camel, a few sheep, an angel...and other mouse ornament.  Oxen, more sheep, the shepherd...and another mouse.  Seriously!?!

There were nine mouse ornaments tucked into the Nativity box.

I'm sure someone is laughing somewhere (hopefully not in the pantry).  It's only just now starting to be me.  They are pretty cute  though.  And one is even knitting.

If you can't beat 'em...

MICE in the oven? OH YES!! I cannot tell you how many times I have had dtr/neighbor pull the stove out (first take the door off and the racks out) and finally we found something called Pest block that you spray, it's like a foam, and then it hardens and them meeces cannot chew thru it. so far so good, no meeces. The stench is awful from 'them' however I LOVE all your mouse ornaments!!

My Mom passed in 2014. I get it.

There is a product called Fresh Cab that we use as mouse deterrent in the cars (available on Amazon). Perhaps some behind the stove would help.

Is Betsy on strike for some kind of demo?

The non real mice are pretty cute. Maybe they should have their own little barn.

Merry Christmas.

I hate mice...but squirrels are really nasty. What is up with Betsy...is she too well fed. Chance used to hunt mice:)

If that's Someone's sense of humor, I'd sure hate to get on Their bad side!!!

What a funny surprise from your Mom -- who know what other treasures you would find in the other boxes she packed. She was giggling in heaven as you unpacked that box. And one knits -- what more can you ask for?

Merry Christmas Sara and St Tim and all the creatures at Equinox Farm. Hope the sheep get a cookie party for Christmas!

I, too, refused the offer of ornaments from my mom and dad. There were bubble lights and lots of glass ornaments. I had too many and have now divided them up between my girls so they can enjoy them. But still kicking myself for not taking the others. Even a little silver tree with a color wheel!! Rethink this, Sara!

I totally get this one! The fact that there is a mouse knitting is the frosting on the cake! Oh, someone is looking down and getting a nice big chuckle out of all of this!

Just taking a quick minute or two to wish you - and all your critters - the merriest of holiday seasons. Your blog is my daily "pick me up"! Thanks.

I think your Mom gave you the perfect gift, via your Dad! Love the little knitting mouse

I wish I had my mother's old ornaments. Some of the really old glass ones still had wax drips on them from tree candles. Your mom sounds like she was a fun lady. Nothing like the smell of baking mice! We had to tear our stove apart and get all new insulation and wires. Our house cats got a good talking to that year.

Maybe Betsy needs an apprentice?

Love the mice packed in with the nativity. Do you think it was your mom, or your dad?

Either way, who could say no. :-)

Little fake mice are always depicted as adorable and your nativity ones are no exception. In real life...not so much. I occasionally have one or two of the little buggers in the house and they are not welcome guests. Hope Betsy gets on the ball soon and takes her job more seriously.

The mice populations run in cycles as do all creatures. I could tell you a real funny story about a mouse and a toaster from the last big cycle. I think it’s funny but most people are horrified. Our big population this year seems to be chipmunks. They are running amok!
Merry Christmas. Your ornamental mice are cute!

Haha, that’s hilarious! I’m so sorry about the mice in your house, that would be really annoying.

Merry Christmas to you and your family,
Judy

“Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse” or Betsy! She’s watching her weight! Nice in the house is disgusting. No more condiment saving for me. That’s what attracted ‘em. Enjoy your moms visitors, though... surely you must remember those mice!

We had some illegal immigrants of the mouse variety too.... the Victor traps work best! They were pulling the insulation out of the hot water tank to make a nest. How on earth do they get in an oven? Hmmm.... I better check mine!
