The Midsummer Meltdown

On the first day of spring.

I thought about transcribing the whole meltdown phone call, but I'd have had to have done it right then to get the full "crazy" and now that the blazing sun has gone down and the air has cooled (some) and I'm not sweating (much) and I'm no longer sobbing (uncontrollably) it's (a little) harder to muster.

And besides, Saint Tim hates the Saint Tim moniker and he'd be getting some sort of major award(s) just for coming home tonight if the events of the afternoon ever got out. Part was witnessed by a nice guy at Auto Zone...but we aren't going into it ;-).

Excessive grass clippings and an obsessive lawn (hate to admit this one too, but it's what they call me) nazi. Straight to the padded cell. And no, this is not the first time I've mowed this spring.

I don't know what this weed is called in proper company, but it's its own chapter in crazy. I spent hours (in the blazing hot sun...sweating...in case you'd forgotten) pulling this from several flower beds. Unsuccessfully.

The difference between a good yard sheep and a bad yard sheep? Lila would have had every weed (and plant) eaten in every garden and raised bed.

Seriously Ewenice. Go ahead. If you eat everything, I can turn it all back into grass. I don't love strawberries that much and I've not cooked a stalk of rhubarb in my life.

But the afternoon cooled down. I took a deep breath and watched the sheep grazing for awhile. Got some wool work done THAT I'D HAVE PLENTY OF TIME TO DO IF I WASN'T SITTING ON THE MOWER! Let it go...

And sat down in the yard with Miss Ewenice, Iris and Weaslie, who was huddled next to me, because if there is one thing a Corgi understands (and fears ;-) it's a midsummer meltdown...on the first day of spring.

Im sooo sorry about your craptacular day. Time to set the pool up, get the ac on, and put lawn mowing on a different time slot. Hope some cool breezes come your way soon.

I think the weed is henbit-can't remember the Latin name. We all have our meltdown moments, and I think a good law mowing is perfect therapy. Chances are slim that a record-warm winter would be followed by a record-warm summer. Just keep telling yourself that...

If I sent you a picture of my garden you would see that all my wonderful raised beds (and the flower beds) are standing tall and proud with hen-bit. I hate that stuff! Tomorrow I'm going to try the vinegar thing and see if it works.

Whoa whoa whoa!!! What's the vinegar thing?!?

It's bad when it's mid-summer in March.... hang in there.

I think the vinegar thing is spray the open leaves with vinegar and the plants will die. But do not hit the grass or anything you want to live, because it will die too. Even though you had a bad day, your photos are beautiful. We won't see blossoms here for 5-6 weeks.

Lovely photos. Surely the sheep seen through pink blossoms eases the crap of the day.

hey at least you have a pretty weed, I have tons of stinging nettle, sheep / goats don't eat it and you need leather gloves to pull it. And since it is a member of the mint family it spreads. Supposed to be good to make into tea.

I think my neighbor was going to try some salt and vinegar as a spray for weeds. Someone else told me to add dish soap to help it stick to the leaves.

Love the pictures.

Sorry about the meltdown. It happens. That weed, I hate that weed!!!!! Bees love it though, when it blooms. I'll have the try the vinegar thing too.

Corgi's understand everything. Taking the time to sit with your dogs was probably the best thing you did for yourself all day.
The heat has to break... it's just crazy making, odd weather.
Take care.

OK Sara....what were you sobbing about. And what's the Saint Tim stuff? I had no idea you were a yard nazi...it's beautiful indeed. When are you two coming up north to cool off and pick up a bottle baby?

Don't you just HATE it when the grass is so long it leaves clippings that look like a hay field? Makes me crazy! I also hate it when one area is longer or thicker than another so I tend to mow almost every-other day in early spring! On the other hand, don't you just love the look of a freshly mowed lawn?

I'm sorry you had a bad day. It sounds like your hubby was helpful ~ that's a good thing! I hope that you're able to relax a bit tomorrow and enjoy your beautiful (mowed!) place...

Hugs!

@ Tombstone Livestock- stinging nettles are a wonderful nerve tonic and a very healthy tea. I harvest the plant right after flowering- just (gloved and long sleeved!) pull it up by the roots and hang them in bunches till they are dry, Then spread a cloth or tarp under the bunches and (gloved!) strip all the leaves off the stalks. I feed a small handful to my horses, every day- when I can get it, it doesn't grow here- and it really makes their coat shine. If you have lots and it's organic, you can market it to the health food stores. Which is probably more than you can say for hen-bit.
Hope the yard and dog therapy made the day better...
