"Whaddya mean what's wrong with my face? Your face don't look so good this morning either!"
Usually going up to the barn in the morning is a highlight of my day. After something awful happens, it takes awhile for the dread to dissipate. The trudge out there throughout the day expecting/looking for the worst is exhausting. This morning I found Graham Lamb with a swollen "black" eye. I didn't need that.
With all the straw covering one side of his big body, I'm assuming he got cast last night - he'd laid down and couldn't get back up for some reason. I couldn't find anything that he could have gotten stuck on or under, but did find a big divot in the straw next to one of the walls, probably where he banged his head around. Of course, being Graham Lamb...you almost have to wonder if maybe someone finally gave him a little of what he had, um, coming to him ;-).
"Yeah, well you should see the other guy!"
Seriously, I feel awful that he was in some sort of situation (probably not a fight...but we really can't say for sure ;-) in the middle of the night and no one was there to help. Things like this take away a little of the fun of shepherding. We pick on Graham a right smart amount, but really, he's one of our/everyone's/even Hank's favorite sheep.
P.S. If I find out you got hurt falling off the Grahaminator2000...

That was actually my first thought. That or he got beat up by his minion chicken.
I've had a couple of goats that got black eyes from fighting like bar wenches. Seriously...
Poor fella. If only he could talk, well maybe not - you'd probably get one heck of an earful.
That is some shiner he's got there. Give him 2 aspirin (kidding) and an ice pack and a strong lecture about his night life.
After tearing down pens I need to set up portable panels later to go out and doctor a ewe this afternoon.
Tried slamming some t-posts into ground as hard as concrete, got the hose and watered spots for a couple, back out in a bit to finish.
We had trouble with one of our ewes last Spring getting cast. She was so pregnant and her fleece was so big, she just couldn't get up half the time. Fortunately, the problem went away when she lambed. Tell that silly sheep that he'd better be careful about where he chooses to sleep, HIS penchant for getting stuck isn't going to fix itself that way:)
I know what you mean about not quite breathing until you know things are ok. I'm sorry they weren't, quite, and am glad it wasn't worse..... I hope he's back to being his usual self soonest!
Aw, poor Graham--I know how you feel about something bad happening to one of your own and the worry that goes with it. My animals tell me so much, yet they still don't actually talk, and it's wicked frustrating at times.
Hope Graham Lamb's eye heals up without any problems.
You could use a nice, event-less week or five by now. Tell Graham to behave - and we still love him, shiner or not.
That's it no more cookies for Gram till he slims down. Hope his eye is ok.
Oh no! I hope his eye is okay.
Poor guy. Hope it was only a one time event.
Poor baby! That is a nasty black eye! I too hope it ends up being only a one time event.
Carly, my old 19 year old ewe lives in the yard now. She's dong tons better since I began giving her 'bute...yes, I do know it's not for "food animals" but I would seriously hurt the person who ate Carly. She's not food, she's family.
Poor feller... has he ever seizured before? Just one more thought (& maybe he isn't so ornery that the others would pick on him:)
I actually read through the Graham posts tonight. You almost have enough to write a Graham Antics book. He could well have been decked by Ford or another family member. He probably thinks the black eye makes him look tough. He's the Graham-a Raminator! And he'll be back!!
Oh Graham. I'm blaming the Grahaminator. Yep.
Remember you were wondering about a "secret life"? Maybe it's time for a barn cam. Maybe you've got yourself some party animals! Never know :-) Do hope Graham's shiner heals up fast-without complications! Definitely needs an ice bag...
Party animal!
Poor Graham! I, too, know what you mean about holding your breath till you check on everyone each day. I do the same. I hope it was a one-time (ahem) thing for Graham. Well, the shiner, anyway!
Poor Sweetie! Hate when that happens. Had to laugh though at the
Graham-a-Raminator! Quite a moniker.
Well, silly Graham - glad he was at least up when you got to the barn. Talking about sometimes dreading to go to barn...I even dream I forgot to feed someone or that I found a whole herd of some kind of animal I didn't know I had...blessings from Wisconsin.
Poor fella..he will have to pick a downhill spot to sleep...or a cot:)
Poor Graham!! There are now reasonably priced web cams that you can put into your barn and view from your computer and even your iphone. But then- "what you don't know won't hurt you" may come into play!
