Thursdays Are For Spinning

"So the wool goes in there..."

"And this wheel thing spins around..."

"And these foot thingies make the wheel turn..."

"So that's how that thing works."

"Hmmm."

"I wonder how you get the wool off the sheeps?"

Those pictures were all from last Thursday.  I'm trying to get more "scheduled" now that Maisie's doing well and about ready to go off to college move to the barn.  The winter got completely away from me, but that's okay.

As I sat in the Wool House yesterday (sunny, but way too cold to spin out on the porch) watching Maisie through the screen door, I thought it a good trade :-).

She stayed busy grazing and out of trouble for at least an hour.  She had good company and was perfectly happy without me, which is how we want all of our kids to grow up, eh?

Except Corgis.  Do they ever grow up?  Just kidding, Weaslie ;-).

So this was yesterday's spinning.  I think the Thursday spinning thing was started by the Yarn Harlot several years ago.  I'm not sure how that worked out for her but she seems much more regimented than me (and also gets way more accomplished) so I'm giving it a go...and mostly because Thursday seems to be the day of the week that is most likely to be "spinnable".

Mondays and Wednesdays - Punkin's Patch work days.
Tuesdays and Fridays - farm work and Hickory days.
Thursdays are for spinning.

Want to join me?

If you're local, come on out on Thursday afternoons from 1:00 to 4:00.  We'll either sit in front of the stove or in the sun out on the porch.  Bring your wheel or a current project.  If you don't have a wheel but would like to learn to spin, I'd be glad to help you give it a try :-).

If you're not local but would still like to come out sometime to spin or just visit with your favorite sheep, drop me a note.  We have a friend with a really nice Bed and Breakfast and can help you plan an enjoyable Bluegrass trip :-).

Those are adorable shots of your little helper. I'm glad she's doing so well!

Love the post. I used to spin every day as I sat down to watch the noon news. It was only a 30 to 40 minute stint but became a productive time. I have an elderly dog who just lost her companion dog to old age so she is my "Maisie" distraction right now. I will use your post to motivate me to get back to my own routine ;-)

Winter may have gotten away from you...but I think you made a lovely trade.

Hmm, is the a big difference in Punkin's Patch work days and farm work days or do they overlap, LOL. Adorable pics of Maisie as usual .... maybe if I set aside time at home to spin I might improve my skills, right now it has been 5 days a month somewhere else.

BTW I have 2 bottle baby angora does living in the bathtub, have to get around to posting my week of that and snow on the mountain.

I must say that the prospect of a visit with you and all the adorable sheep (and dogs, cats and horses) makes me WANT to take up spinning!

I would love to join you! I have so much fiber to spin. As soon as my husband and I buy a camper your farm will be on the top of our list as places to visit! But until that happens I promise to sit at my wheel on Thursdays for at least an hour and spin. I am so jealous I just swung by my parent farm (which is open on Fridays) and my mom was spinning and my sister was knitting. I wish I could be there all day too to hang out :( Darn work.

That's a beautiful picture of Corgis! And, I loved Maisie's explanation of how to spin.

Things are looking very good!

I have a message for Saint Tim that involves you. Don't you think he should have his own blog "Cooking With Saint Tim?"
Let us get to it from Punkin's Patch. I think he must have a lot of "good" ideas for things we should eat.

Always beautiful pictures and so sad that Maisie is growing up!! Know you're more than ready! She needs to start growing some wool to pay for her room and board!!

I have been a complete slacker in the spinning dept. this winter, and I don't even have a bottle lamb! Of course I DO have a high-maintenance homeschool kid.... Wanna trade???

Maisie looks so HEALTHY grazing out there with all her friends keeping an eye on her... but I think the corgi picture is the best!

Ya done good, Sara. Little Maisie would not have lived if it hadn't been for you, and look at her now, helping you with the spinning.
I'd love join in the spinning someday.

LOL "is this edible? is that edible? can i munch on this? whats the cat doing? are you done yet mom?"

*scampers off to the lawn to play "corgi dogs" and then grabs a bite to eat...*

If I could leave today for Kentucky and be a part of your wool parties, i would do it in a heartbeat sister!

I wonder if Maisie should write a little Beginning Spinning book?

I like Lori Skoog's suggestion.

Miss Maisie looks so good! She has a pretty face.

Weaslie, you are just too cute! What would your Mom do without you to help watch Maisie?

It's a great idea to set up a schedule like that. I seem to be doing the 7-days-a-week-work schedule and that's not always good for me. I wish I could come spin on the porch but you're a bit far. Maybe I'll try and do spinning on Thursdays here instead.

Sara, you have done very good! Maisie looks wonderful, as does your spinning I might add. A wonderful & blessed tradeoff! Wish we lived closer - but I'll try for 'Thursday Spinning' here in Colorado - & joining in spirit anyway.
Thanks for the beautiful pictures!
:-)

Maisie is such a sweetheart, and she seems to have caught on right away! :) I'll bet you're going to miss having her in the house, but as you say all children grow up, and it's our responsibility to teach them well.. :D

Maisie looks great! And obviously smart. I remember Marcel figuring out your wheel too. And now you're spinning him while Maisie watches. I'd be there in a heartbeat except for about 700 miles :-(
Maisie will be doing all the arts and crafts when she goes to Lamb Camp.

I have taken Sara up on her invitation more than once. It is worth the drive for the ambience which melts away stress, and the friendship extended. It's also a chance to meet the characters from the blog and immediately you sense that you are "home".

Maisie is an honor student and I would bet that she could help spin by rearranging your roving ;-) Someday there will be some of her own in that basket.

One day, I'd like to visit.

You know I might take you up on that sometime in the near future! I'm a complete novice but am so interested. And good for Maisie! Spreading her wings and leaving the nest :)

I wish I was local I would be there in a swish of a lambs tail ~ sorry Maisie. I have been wanting to learn to spin since forever ! I use to raise and show Angora rabbits, and my goal was to learn to spin. Well I raised fine bunnies for years and went to all the fairs but never did spin anything myself ... sad really :(
