An Amazing Story I Just Had To Share

A couple years ago I somehow found a neat sheep ranching blog - from out west.  Or maybe she found me - regarding Hug a Sheep Day.  I don't always remember how everyone finds everyone, we just treasure the finds we all make, eh?  :-)

Tucked away in the bottom of her Furry Friends/Meet the Characters page is the most beautiful sheep movie I've ever seen.  Like make you cry it's so beautiful.  Her husband made it.  Here, go watch it and then come back for the rest of the story.

 

So, with Hug a Sheep Day just around the corner I thought I should check in with her...and found this amazing story.

Keep Calm

And hug a sheep.  I've seen all the cute Keep Calm stuff on Pinterest and thought, well, what's the best way to keep calm?  Yep, hug a sheep :-).

This fall is just flying by.  Hug a Sheep Day will be here before I know it.  We are once again hosting an open farm day and Graham is already staring through the gate looking for his cookies and hugs.  We've had a little talk about ripping peoples clothes off manners and he promises to try to be good.

Hug a Sheep Day at Equinox Farm will be on October 27th from 1:00 to 4:00.   Let's hope for good weather, but I have a feeling we might all be wearing wool this year...which is nice :-).  Pouring rain, however, is not and would cause a lot of problems, so let's just not even think about that for now.

You are welcome to just come out and hug a few sheep (we'll have a pen of friendly, mostly well behaved sheep just for that purpose :-), but we also usually have several spinners, knitters and maybe even a weaver this year scattered around the Wool House porch, yard and barn.  Bring your current project and join in for show and tell or bring a project you could use some help with.

• And if you don't have a current project and you'd like to learn to spin, knit or weave, just ask.


• Or bring your camera and shoot some sheep shots.  


• Betsy loves a good party and will be happy to entertain you with her party antics.  


• Iris would be thrilled to tell you all about her hard job trying to boss the sheep around.


• Weaslie will follow you around like you are the greatest person in the world...if you have a cookie in your hand.


• Want the full farm experience?  We'd be happy to hand you a weed eater or pitchfork ;-).  

Hug a Sheep Day is for everyone, near and far.  Plan your own party and if you'd like to be listed as a participant or host, go to the Hug a Sheep site and leave a comment ("We're having a farm party - everyone's invited!" or "I don't have any sheep, but I'm going to dig into my stash and find some beautiful wool yarn to hug!").

But mostly remember...everyday is a good day to hug a sheep!

Oh good grief - I hit "publish" and could hear the groans from the barn all the way to the house.  Okay, please feel free to bring the sheep treats (a box of vanilla wafers, saltine crackers, graham crackers) if you'd like.  Okay, okay!  Dog biscuits are fine too.  Yeesh.

Okay, now 20 says I should ask everyone to forward the Hug a Sheep site around (since I'm behind getting it posted :-/) to see how many people we can get hugging sheep that day.  Well, every day ;-).

The Fall Wool Festival

We ended up with a really nice weekend. The original forecast called for cold rain Saturday and Sunday, but luckily they were wrong :-). It was a pretty chilly in the evenings and Sunday, but a certain heavy wool sweater kept me toasty warm.  Here are a few shots.  There are more pictures on the festival blog.

20 on one of his few breaks...also known as before the festival opened for the day.  He was one busy sheepy.  We had a little chat on the way home and he said if I kept sticking a Keep Calm and Hug A Sheep sign on him that he might need a stunt double for all that hugging.

Renny made some new friends over the weekend.

And I enjoyed teaching a bunch of really fun people how to drop spindle and made some new friends as well :-).

Wool Festival Weekend

20's having a blast at the Kentucky Wool Festival.  He's wearing a Hug a Sheep sign and is the most popular sheep around :-).

The weather (supposed to be cold and raining yesterday) turned off beautiful and today looks good too :-).  More later...

"Wonder if she's going to be able to get all those cool looking wool wreaths done before the festival starts on Friday..."

I'm really not that behind, but I'll feel a lot better when all the bows are attached and the truck is completely loaded.  The wreaths are pretty neat I think and I'm happy with the felted sheep this fall.  I've got a big box of Stella's honey packed, many, many bags of wool and pretty roving (Petunia, Graham, Beanie Baby and Ford are super nice), the usual Christmas and greeting cards and we have the 2013 Equinox Farm calendar ready to go too.  My favorite drop spindle kits are packed, some fun bird nest builder kits and 20 has his wool sweater ready.  Looks like he might need it this weekend :-/.  There are also a couple fun surprises as well :-).  

If you are in the area, the Kentucky Wool Festival is a fun event.  While more of a craft festival than a true wool festival, there will be plenty of fiber goodies in the wool tent and the 'road of food' is beyond outstanding - think homemade chicken and dumplings, all kinds of homemade cobblers, roasted corn on the cob, baked potatoes and sweet potatoes and all the usual fried yummies :-).
