Busy As A Butterfly

My Tour de Fleece spinning the first four days was...a bit disappointing. I did spin every day, but not the two ounces I'd "budgeted" for each day and I was slipping way behind.  After some encouragement from the Wool House Crafters last night, I put my "butt in seat" this afternoon and got quite a bit done.  The "butt in seat" principle may apply to other aspects of life, but I haven't fully researched that ;-).

As I worked, I watched a beautiful butterfly working the Blanket Flowers outside the front windows. I now know it's a Red Admiral.  I've seen one Monarch so far, but haven't started looking for eggs and caterpillars yet.  I've also seen a couple Swallowtails.  I planted parsley and dill to encourage more of them and milkweed for the Monarchs.  Fingers crossed :-).

saw my first monarch caterpillar yesterday, about an inch long, on the milkweed at our farm property. we saw quite a few caterpillars last year, in various lengths, but they never got to the capsule stage - they were all gone within a few days. they have so many natural predators - it's a wonder any of them survive. i'm not into raising them myself - i wouldn't be careful/attentive enough. but i do try to encourage the milkweed - our small patches seem to double each year. they don't look as healthy this year, though - i see a lot of fungus-looking stuff. i suppose it has something to do w/the nearly every day rains. but our corn and hay have looked great; the farmer who rents our land was able to get the corn in at just the right time, and our land is hilly/sloped, so most of it drains well. --suz in NE ohio

I be seen lots of bumblebees by my mint, oregano, and catmint, but no butterflies yet. Thank you for sharing your photos. Kudos to you for your butterfly support efforts.
