Shearing Day

I really wanted to title this Hair Cut Day, but I guess it's technically Haircut Day...which just looks wrong...but I looked it up...so I decided to just go with Shearing Day and avoid the entire situation ;-).

Shearing Day, other than being a long, hard day for Bill, went off without a hitch.  I had a ton of great help and company and for the most part the sheep behaved very well, even Petunia.  Maisie again got her new 'do standing up...and only bit me once.  We'll put that in the "win" column haha.

Rebecca Boone now aka Rebecca Two

I'd love to know what Willard is telling Baaxter.  Or maybe I wouldn't.  Except Willard is a sheep of Impeccable Character, so he's probably just laughing because Bill hit a ticklish spot or something :-).

That is Baaxter under that huge pile of wool!

And this is Tavia, who actually was sheared at the end of the day, but I wanted to put her picture in here after one of the big sheep to show either how big they are or how little the Jacobs are.

The last picture of the "babies" - Bullwinkle and Levi were working Rebecca Three and Stella pretty hard for either a cookie or to open the gate so they wouldn't have to get their big boy haircuts (haircuts with an s looks fine ;-). With Liddy, Andy and Woody.

An extra special treat this year was/is (looks like I need to go back to English class :-/) the fleece tags. Dana gave each sheep the sweetest sketch of them being sheared, their name fancied up and some even got little notes about what was talked about or happened while they were being shorn.

They are beyond adorable!

Her husband documented each one, thankfully, before any lanolin soaked into them.  After the fact it was pointed out that I could have stuck each one in a plastic sleeve.  Maybe she'll come back next year wink wink ;-).

We all liked that Little Liddy got a pink sheet :-).

And here he is...the one you've been waiting for...Momma's Lil' Butterball :-D.

That's Rebecca One raking up.  The numbers are in order of how long I've known each.  Rebecca One spun the original Punkin yarn for me years ago, long before I ever dreamed I'd have a flock of sheep and be spinning yarn myself.  Crazy, eh?

"This is really not what I expected."

All grown up (sniffle).

Bill pulled a great trick on me again this year.  I'll post that story tomorrow.  Poor Burrnie... ;-)

Wish I was there. I would go back and put Dana's drawings in a plastic sleeve. Love the fleece in reverse

It is so interesting seeing all this! Shearers here use some kind of electric setup, and they won't setup for less than ten sheep or so (or so I've been told!)

Oh my - Baaxter has gone grey! Oh my, Taevia really does look teeny after that photo of all of Baaxter's floof! And Buulwinkle looked a little dazed after his first haircut "Mr Bill, what do I do now...?"

So - will you be selling any of that lovely fleece or keeping it all for yourself? 😁

Wow! The year has flown by, it seems like just last week since the last haircut. Gorgeous fleeces and such well behaved kids!

Bill has a completely electric set up, too. It starts at the box hanging up at top of the wall down to his hand piece. I have an "amateur" set of clippers, but nothing like these. I got to try them out on Maisie's chest when she was being naughty and he was having to help hold her and they are really nice.

As far as the minimum or minimum charge, it's a fair charge for sure. That is not a job for the faint of heart...or back!

We do have one cold day coming up, Friday, but they'll have all week to acclimate a little and I'll give them all extra hay that night and shut the barn doors :-).

Almost all of it is for sale. There are a few reservations and I think I'll keep Tavia's tiny fleece, Bullwinkle of course, and maybe half of Levi's.

What beautiful fleeces and a great remembrance to have the cards for each sheep. Was there a cookie party to follow?

Bill is an artist with the clippers! I hope you might convey to him that people all over the place admire his skill, precision, and gentle handling of the sheep. :-)

And those fleeces! Love every one. So beautiful. (And this is another time when I wish for internet scratch-n-sniff! Love the smell of fleece..........)

Bill was so gentle with Bullwinkle and Bullwinkle was a good boy - or at least it looked that way to me. ( I, who know nothing........)
