One of my favorite Christmas traditions is making and hanging peanut butter bird seed pine cone ornaments on Saint Tim's grandparent's trees along the Prairie Path in his hometown. This year I mailed some ornaments for City Boy and Janbaby to hang and made a few for our birds here.
I hung them on Christmas Day during the unseasonably warm and sunny afternoon. Yesterday dawned cold and rainy and the birds were glad to see them in the lilac bush near the feeder...and safely away from Betsy.
The cardinals feed early. I hear them start pipping away before the sun rises.
Then the little birds.
"Thans fo the bir seed anth peanut buther."

Tho, I'm athuming (sorry) - that this particular ornament involves: a pinecone that is rolled(?) in peanut butter (crunchy? creamy?) and then in birdseed? My birds would love them! As would, I am afraid, the dreaded squirrels.
Well, we got some snow today....and it's only around 18 degrees. So much for out green grass.
The birds must be very happy with your treats.
And how are these made?

I agree with Small Farm Girl. We need a tutorial post to show the steps to make these. Know a source of pinecones for fir-less people other than the dreaded cinnamon ones at Hobby Lobby?
Lucky birds! And they get leftover yarn bits on the branches come spring.
Oh, what a good idea! I haven't thought about this particular birdy treat for years! As I sit and notice that the birds have emptied the feeder.... perhaps I need to go hunting for some pinecones!
LOL, I used to make those all the time when I was a kid.
Yummy treat in almost any weather for birds, squirrels, and adventurous raccoons :-)
I'm sorry about your loss of your inside house cat. Life is just too short for our furry friends. I wish they could live with us for our whole lives, but it isn't meant to be. I guess that way we get to have more and meet more furry animals. Still it is just way, way sad.

I love feeding the birds outside. this would be fun to make. Is it just a pinecone with peanut butter and birdseed in it? I will try one.
