OK, out of curiosity and using an architectural perspective technique I learned in college, I leveled the photo and drew the horizon line, from which I projected a line through the base of two objects (fence & cat). From the same vanishing point I projected another line across the top of the cat, which shows you how tall the cat would if the same fence were next to it.
To me it looks like the cat is roughly half as tall as the fence. It's your call on how tall the fence is to calculate your cat. Hope this helps!

Things That Make You Go Hmmm
An interesting mathematical perspective from my smart friend Flowerweaver...

Like I said, big cat!
Sara...that is not a house cat. It's frame and tail carriage are not the same. The way people put hoaxes on the internet today you never know what is real. Don't the police know who the big cat belonged to? Are you still putting the sheep in the barn at night? Is it still a concern in your neighborhood?
Your smart friend's drawings brought useful perspective to the photo ( and jogged memories of Geometry class!). This gives credence to looking for an animal of considerably larger scale than previously imagined. Hopefully it is caught before there is a cat-astrophe.
It looks like a mountain lion...I hope they get it soon.
