State Of The Bee Yard Address

In a spring where many local beekeepers are reporting winter hive losses of between 30 and 50 percent, Stella kept all seven of her hives buzzing happily along.

And while that in itself is an impressive statistic, it includes one tiny swarm we picked up in August that never even got one full box of bees and honey pulled together.

This is not the first time she's coddled a tiny, late season hive along.

As the old saying goes, "A swarm in May is worth a load of hay. A swarm in June is worth a silver spoon. A swarm in July (or August) isn't worth a fly."

Unless you're Stella - a bee charmer with a golden thumb :-).

And that is why Stella was awarded "The Beekeeper Award" in 2010. Stella sets a good example that we can all learn from.

Yay for Stella and the bees! Care and concern pays off with all livestock, including bees! Looking forward to honey harvest blogs........

What a cute rhyme. I've never heard it before. We lived across the street from a church that always had trouble with bees setting up housekeeping behind the planks of the walls. We saw a few swarms come and go. That was incredible to witness!

Oops... I hit 'enter' too soon!
What was the cause of such huge losses of hives?
What was Stella able to do that other's didn't or couldn't do?
