Free Range Chickens

Ten minutes in the life of Chicken No.

Out with the sheep by the end of the arena.

Less than ten minutes later, that's her (tiny white dot) headed down the driveway in the front field.

And that's why every time I think "That's it! Those stupid hide their eggs all over the farm so I have to buy eggs at the grocery store Adventure Chickens have got to go!" I have to just laugh...and chuck another 6 million dollar bag of chicken food in the back of the car.

Oh, my, she is adventurous!
We had free range chickens... but at that time we also had little boys who delighted in going on treasure hunts. Maybe you should get some little boys to add to your menagerie!

I have one white hen that does the same thing! She putters around with the sheep way out in the pasture during the morning then eventually heads back in. Well, she did anyway, until this cooper's hawk showed up and tried to have chicken dinner. Now they are all under house arrest in a pen and none to happy about it.

The other day, Scott cleaned out some old wool sacks with wool from one of our box stalls so we could use it for lambing. He found a bunch of eggs and tossed them out. The chickens who laid those eggs have been dead for 5 years. He said the smell almost knocked him over.

If she was protecting the farm she would be the Lone Ranger!
( or the Lawn Ranger)
The feed may be costly, but the entertainment is priceless!

My chickens cover 5 acres all day long. But that's not enough, now they wander over into the neighbor's field for bugs that live under the cow pies. It amazes me how much ground they cover in such a short time. The rooster keeps a pretty good eye on them and they're locked up at night. Spring is the worst when the foxes are around looking for food for their young. But they love their life and I would hate to have chickens that can't roam.
