What a beautiful little sheep. And what a hard question to answer. There are so many things I love about sheep. I love that they grow and give us their fleeces so that we can share in their warmth. I love their sass. And I love their regal and royal bearing (with a few notable exceptions among the Equinox family). But mostly I love that spending time watching sheep be sheep seems to somehow dissolve stress.

Pick me! What I love about sheep: everything! They are sweet and silly and intelligent. They have beautiful eyes. They make wonderful friends / pets. They have fantastic and unique personalities, every one of them... if folks would just get to know them. There are so many varieties and breeds. They don't (usually) mind you giving them a haircut and taking their wool to make wonderful things with. The provide therapy: Lamb Therapy my husband calls it. A way to reduce stress. They are bouncy and fun, even when they get older. I could go on and on. Sheep are precious. And they are in the Bible, too!

They are so darn cute, especially yours!

I love sheep, they are like best friends that keep giving and giving, it should be year of the sheep every year ;-)

I love the sheep for the unconditional love. The sheep are peaceful which makes the visits to farm a wonderful experience. "Most times".

Oh I would love to win this sheep! What do I love about sheep -- so many things - their individual character, lamb races, "teefers", the perpetual smile that the Babydoll Southdown have. . . I though of your sheep when I saw Google this morning -- btw.

I LOVE to watch a lamb run =o)

I love sheep because they seem to be our gentler, better selves. I know there must be ornery or selfish sheep out there, but I haven't seen them. And in addition to reminding us that the world can be a happy and nurturing and beautiful place, they give us WOOL! What could be better?

I love being able to meet the sheep before buying their wool, then I think of them as I'm carding/spinning/knitting with their soft, wonderful wool :-) Happiness!!

I love all that they give us. Their lovely smells (well, not ALL lovely, but mostly!), the cute jumping babies, the beautiful wool, the relaxation of watching them (let's do a study on brain chemicals - I bet those good ones kick in after watching sheep for just a few minutes), the job they give to the herding dogs, oh -- I could go on and on and may have to post more later.

I love all my sheep but I love my sassy, curious ones the best. They make me laugh, even when I am doing chores in the dark and snow and negative 30 wind chill.

I have never been interested in sheep. We have a few farms around us that have them, but never really cared much. Until I started reading your blog. Now I love hearing about the antics, personalities, etc. of all of your sheep. I have started following a few other sheep blogs too. I don't know, maybe some day I might get some myself!

Anonymous said...

That is a hard question! But, I think I'd have to say that what I love most about sheep is that they are so wooly and fluffy!!! I can't look at your sheep pictures without thinking of that cute little scene in Despicable Me where Agnes says, "It's so fluffy!!!!!!!"

And, yes, I say it JUST like her. :)

Did you make that little sheep?? That is the cutest thing. I so want one. By the way, my girls are doing good. We finally got them moved to the farm so I can see them every day now. One of them had a sore foot a couple weeks ago but we got medicine from the vet and she is all healed up now. Love my sheep!!

I love sheep for being so versatile. There's a breed for every occasion!

I love their manure!! It is not hard to deal with like cow manure or smelly like chicken manure, but it is great for the land!!

I love to read about all their antics and I love the way they love cookies. I have played that video a dozen times. Most of all I love their fleece.

I've loved sheep since I was a little girl and the Shuler family down the road, gave me a little baby sheep that was a triplet and the mother didn't have enough milk so I bottle fed it and raised it till it could go back and live with its sheep family, about broke my heart, but ever since then...this may be my year.

Alice said...

I love the very smell and touch and sight of sheep. I love the way that you can be yourself around them and they love you still. Sheep love back unconditionally and when you leave, your heart is filled with goodness for having known them.

My favorite thing about sheep is their spunkiness! I was trying to isolate (only) one thing about sheepies that is my most favorite - but the fact that I just couldn't stop watching the Google sheep gave me the clue! I love sheep's determination and attitude. Sometimes it's obvious (Maisie, Baxter), and sometimes it's subtle (Ford - I _will_ sleep out here...). It occurs to me that it's kind of like cats v dogs. (Most) cats seem to have more independence/self respect than dogs, and various studies have suggested that that characteristic is linked to the length of time that each species has been domesticated/living closely with humans. Sheep have been domesticated quite a while, but I like how they seem to have maintained a core of "attitude".

So - my favorite thing? Attitude :o

(D'oh - I just realized, my rav name, chosen years ago, underscores this! "Spicyfleece")

What I love about sheep? Well it's that much less grass mowing to do on 20 acres, besides they have such cute babies.

She looks so much like our Ashe, who we unfortunately lost last fall. But she gave us the miracle lamb Naveed, who was raised by the best goat in the world, Myrtle. And she would look great on the shelf next to Ms. Eweneice...

I raise Shetlands and have found I love sheep more than I thought I would. I love hugging my first bottle lamb Zola whos almost a year now and dreaming of her fleece and I love watching the lamb races every evening and learning each ones personality. Every day is something new to love.

I might like goats a little better than sheeps...I had a goat once and loved him so much! I wanted to have sheep and it was a goal back in 1996 but I decided to go back to College instead...now I don't have a barn or fence...I love your sheep and enjoy your blog and flock very much:)

I love that sheep are wonderful wooly creatures who, through their magic, convert air, water, sunshine and grass to a beautiful, multifaceted fiber- and that they look so adorable in every season and at every point while they are doing it! Besides, who could not love the way lambs bounce!

I love sheep because they are good, snuggly listeners. They are silly and sweet. Warm and cuddly. There is nothing not to love about them. The end.

That's a great felted sheepy! I'm sure her new owner will love her. We love sheep because they are a perfect fiber factory! A crop of warm fiber every year while being easy on the environment, plus having adorable lambs and also staying appealing themselves as adults. Very sweet (mostly) and social, huggable any time of year!

Sheep, their wool, their smell, causes a peacefulness within me that other animals do not provide my senses. Your photography is the best way for me to start my day. And, Hank, of course. I used to have Leonbergers which are hybrids of three breeds, Great Pyrenees being one of them. Love gentle giants. Our Adler died in June at the age of 10 so Hank is special to watch. That, and I do have a 5 year old grandson, Hank...

I had my comment all ready to publish when I accidentally "lost it" somehow. I'm going to try to duplicate it, but I'm sure the original was much better. . . . . .

I have loved sheep most of my adult life. For years it had been my dream to have some land and a small flock of sheep to raise as "pets" and for their fiber. When I became disabled in 1999 I had to graciously abandon my dream and live life in a drastically different way. I had always collected sheep and sheep "items". When my collection reached 100 I re-evaluated it and realized how many I had added just because it was a sheep, not because I really loved it. So I thinned out my collection down to (a) sheep that were a gift and (b) sheep that I truly loved and that were meaningful in some way. The remainder I sold at a garage sale. Now I have my small, lovingly curated collection that I look at often and it brings me such joy. It had always bothered me that I did not know about the different sheep breeds, so I began to research information through different sheep blogs. I was fortunate to find your blog first!

My hope is that someday, health permitting, I might be able to travel to Equinox Farm and attend one of your public events. It is a hope like that which makes it easier to live my very disabled life. I have a "bucket list" of dreams, and visiting you and your flock is definitely at the top of my list. I am so very grateful to you for your blog; I have learned so much from you and look forward to each new entry!

Sorry this became so long . . . . thank you for sharing your life and your sheep with us!
Warm Regards, Lisa

Maisie was the first sheep in my life.I found your blog around the time of her birth and instantly fell in love with ALL sheep.I shared my interest in your blog with my sister, who also LOVES sheep now too.Two Christmases ago,my sister bought me one of your calendars for a gift.It touched me so deeply I cried. The "Keep Calm and Hug A Sheep" card is STILL on my fridge door.I love how you present sheep to us each day. That's all I have to go by.However...my boyfriend can sound EXACTLY like a sheep.{I heard real ones at exhibitions} To give me the giggles,he'll ba-a-a-a-a-a out of the blue. I pretend I have a real sheep outside, when he ba-a-a-a-a's.Sheep have it all...wool,adorable faces, personality, and the cutest voices ever!

Well, I don't have sheep of my own, but lucky enough to have a neighbor with Shetland Sheep, who welcomes help in the barn and with her fiber business in exchange for spinning and knitting lessons.

I have to echo what several other people have already mentioned, I can spend hours just watching and listening, from the 'yelling' when I arrive with scraps, watching them drift away once the goodies are gone, wobbly lambs first trip out of the barn, excitement at being outside, then exhausted and sleeping snuggled up close to their mamma ewe. Young ram lambs playing the headbutting game, then doing it for real to establish their pecking order the next fall at breeding time.

Have been lucky enough to help with lambing for several years now, and if I had to pick just one thing I love about sheep, it would be the way the ewes 'talk' to their lambs during labor, and the reassuring little noises they make immediately after lambing, often while multitasking, licking the lamb clean and dry. (I'm sure there are examples on YouTube).

I have quite a few sheep books, mainly farm or knitting related, but stumbled across 'Beautiful Sheep' a few years ago, of various breeds at their finest, it's literally a glamorous photo shoot of many different breeds of sheep, here's the Amazon link
