Jumping On The Bandwagon

When I saw Mason Dixon Knitting's headline "Bang Out A Carbeth" Wednesday I was immediately intrigued.  That's a super cute sweater and I just happened to have Rebecca Boone yarn burning a hole in my stash.  It would be perfect!

The sweater is short and wide.  Rebecca Boone is short and wide!  We're going to bang it out?  Anyone who's gotten between a Cotswold and food has a particularly good understanding of the word "bang"!

20 dug through the stash basket and pulled out Rebecca Boone's pretty silver yarn.  He grabbed the Baaxter Black's yarn as well.  Just in case.

"Just in case, what, 20?!?"

"That I'd be short on yardage or not be able to get gauge?!?"

"Just sayin'..."

Well, it would have been a game of yarn chicken...if I'd been able to get gauge :-(.  Looks like we're going to [Baaxter] Out A Carbeth.  There is enough yardage and the gauge was spot on.  The only thing I'm not 100% sure on is his color.

By itself, it's not bad.  It's a darkish grayish brownish with an almost tweedy quality.  Next to the shimmery silver Cotswold though it looks a bit drab.  I may be letting that sway me.

Still, I cut a few short samples and mixed up some possible overdyes.

One thing I really enjoyed about the Elizabeth shawl was the use of color over her grays.  Baaxter didn't let me down either.

Even though muted by the darkish grayish brownish, I felt like the colored colors were too...colorful.

These two were my favorite.  You're shocked, right?  I like both of these natural looking browns.  I like Baaxter's real natural color as well.

Any thoughts?

I really like Baaxter's natural color. Looking closely it seems to have a purple hue in the mix already.

Wow - that yarn all looks lovely. It is hard to tell exact shades, but . . . The next to last picture - count from the left, 1, 2, 3 - that looks like it would be my favourite. Sort of rusty, orangey, deep colour. But my monitor may not be giving me accurate colour - and one strand looks very different than a whole sweater.

Good luck choosing - I can't wait to see all the stages leading to completion.

I love Baaxter and I love natural colors, so these would be my choice too!

I like Baaxter just as he is. A lovely silvery-brown.

Now I am dewy-eyed, remembering a tiny, dark lambie with a white X on his face. Awwww.

I love over-dyed gray.... The colors are so much richer than if they started over monochromatic (zerochromatic?) white. (One of my favorite dyed yarns, ever, was turquoise over a medium gray.....) I love these colors. They look great alone, and with Baaxter-au-naturel. Of course I love that gorgeous baked-pumpkin-pie orange.......... :-)

The interesting shape/construction are key to what attracts me to the sweater, so I'd maybe want a light-ish yarn that would showcase the construction?

I like the natural colors too, Sara. MDK is saying that this Bang Out is so quick and simple that we'll be making more than one so then there's no problem with Baaxter's natural color...... just knit another one or two during I-Knit-A-Rod!!
Murphy's Tips are light and dark gray and spun up to a marled yarn. That's my first choice. But then this morning on Snippets the idea of using a worsted weight as opposed to a bulky weight (see Stopover) was presented and really opens the door for a lot of my handspun..........Wheeeee!!

Uh oh, I never read the "snippets" because I thought they were just a re-cap of the week that I'd already read :-o. I'll have to go back and look. I really want to use RB for the Iknitarod so maybe an Elizabeth Zimmerman version...

Use Murphy, use Murphy :-D

Yes, the EZ version is great too! Maybe I'll join you in Iknitarod...there's a brown Coopworth Lamb, Georgie, looking to become a sweater!

Love Rebecca Boone as is - its a great silver color. Also like all the colors you dyed of Baaxter, especially if used in a Fair isle pattern and each is nice on its own too. I think you just have to choose the one that you are the most comfortable with and that goes well with your wardrobe. I'm sure you will make a wonderful Carbeth with any color you choose.

I am in a bit of grey and garnet project right now. Are you going to use 2 colors or just one color? I love browns but can not wear them. I am torn over all the colors you have going on but like the brown on the right---looks like my morning coffee. To be totally honest I love the grey as is and would knit in just some color work! No matter what I am sure it will be a great sweater.

What beautiful colors! It will be fun to see how they all come together!

Well I was loving the teal and the pumpkin and the rose color until I saw the pattern. Baaxter au natural is my vote, either way it is a really cute sweater:)

Look how brave you were with all those colors! I like the dark rose myself but I Need Orange has a point about the construction showing up, so maybe the lighter of the 2 browns you like. It will be great no matter what!

I kinda vote for Baby B, a natural ~

But I also like the rust option ~ goes well with denim :-)

This will be the most unhelpful comment of all. I love BB undyed, and I also love all the overdyed. :-)

I'm spinning "looks black" Romney lamb fleece (from last year's Maine Fiber Frolic tent) that's coming out more grey than I expected. I like it for a main color but I wanted to do more experimenting with dyes. I've only dyed white fleece or skeins previously so I stuck a mini skein of Targhee in along with the grey. I used pumpkin & ochre and when it dried: I got Muffin!
BUT I still can't believe how different the white skein came out ;)
And I should probably learn to take better notes!
