The Only Thing Better Than A Walk With The Dogs (And A Cat :-)

Is if a sheep joins you :-D.

Tilly, Hank, Kate, Comby and I started back to the right side of the ponds yesterday.  As we shooshed through the snow along the creek I heard a "galump galump galump" and Liddy came racing past, bouncing through snow drifts, kicking up her heels, chasing the dogs.

She hasn't come on a walk since she was a little lamb living in the house.  I guess she was tired of being cooped up at the barn with the old fogeys.  Note, they all could have come along on our walk, but the ambition levels up there when everything's snow covered and I'm bringing them breakfast in bed...not so grate akshully ;-).

They all played around the trees at the end of the arena for awhile and Liddy snuffled down through the snow and found a little grass to pick around on.  Comby and I brushed off a spot and sat down in the sun and we all just enjoyed hanging out on a nice afternoon.  We'll make it back to the ponds another day.

Here are some iPhone pics.  My battery died before I could get any video.  I momentarily regretted not having my big girl camera, but in the end was glad I didn't.  I could never have captured pictures that were as fun as being there in real life.

As always...  "Spend the afternoon.  You can't take it with you."  Annie Dillard

I've had a couple questions about Hank and about livestock guardian dogs in general.  I have some beautiful Hank pics to share tomorrow and I'd be happy to try to answer any questions you might have.  I am Not An Expert by any means, but I can share our experiences and some good resources.

If you have a question(s), leave them in the comments or drop me an email and I'll do my best!

It's amazing how special taking a walk together can be to an animal, even when you do it every day. Mira gets very excited when I take a walk around the pasture, and dances along beside me, pirouetting, prancing sideways or backwards, and occasionally jumping up on me to make sure I'm watching. Watcher does the same thing, but with more barking and slobbery doggy-kisses. :)

Good Liddy! Nice that she came out and had some sheepy fun.

It's funny to see her sniffing at the tree, as though she is just trying to keep up with the notion she might be part dog too. :-)

I have a question, what is Hank's relationship with Kate like? Are they opposing forces or different players on the same team? I mean if Hank is sheep protection and Kate is sheep enforcement, does that lead to conflict between the two? Hank knows he is not a sheep right?

I've been thinking about it for a couple of months now and am happy to be able to finally ask.

"Spend the afternoon. You can't take it with you." This is excellent advice. Thanks for letting us spend part of it with you. :-)

A walk is always nicer with animal friends. Our one kitty who goes outside, Bella, likes to walk with me up the drive to get the mail. On the way back she races along and then has a roll in the drive ( when there is no snow). It is lovely that you have these sunny days to enjoy being out in the fresh air.

Liddy seems right at home with the "other" friends ~ she's a sweet heart. Does Hank like to hang out with his human friends or is he more of a 'don't hug me - I am busy working' kinda guy? Thanks for sharing your walks in the snow, it's beautiful :-)

We have three older lambs that were raised on a bottle. When we call Zeus (lgd), the lambs still come running. Not quite the same as having a sheep join you for a walk but when they came careening around a corner the other day, it made me think of you and your sheep. :-)

Such a lovely quote . . . and a wonderful way to look at life. To be able to savor these moments with your beloved family members and capture them to share here . . . Thank you!
