A Shepherd Venturing Into The Great Unknown

The kitchen ;-).

Tadaa :-)

20's Uncle John built the box in the center of the island.  It is a perfect place to stuff anything that might be is cluttering up the counter if you have company coming or Lori keeps harping on you to take pictures ;-).

This shepherd had been in our living room for years.  I don't know what made me think to move him into the kitchen, but I love him here.  He came from a folk art gallery that used to be in downtown Cynthiana, The Gourd Patch.  He's signed, but I can't read it :-/.

Don't worry, Betsy still has her bed and breakfast spot.

A little closer look at the calendar.  Each month is a different breed of sheep and plant, tree or flower to go with.  The artist is Emily Fratson and it's just stunning.  A treasured gift.

This is one of my favorite updates - a garbage bin...for dog and cat food :-).  That's Kate's auxiliary bed tucked in the pantry.  She goes in there whenever I'm cooking.  I try not to be offended, but can't help but remember that she is very smart ;-).

The artist who painted these beautiful bar stools was my grandmother.  The wood floor is actually vinyl.  I loved the old floor, but like most things I love, it's obsolete and we couldn't find it any more. I like the look of this.  It's a little slick, but I'm guessing after we rub enough dirt into it, that won't be a problem anymore ;-).

The granite is Costa Esmerelda, which is a light grayish green.  I had a hard time getting a picture that really shows the true color.  This is pretty close.

But the color is maybe a little closer to this...if it were lighter/brighter.  The picture of Betsy's bed is probably the closest to real life.  I was really nervous about the counter tops.  Will they be green enough?  Too green? What color paint will match?  They turned out perfect and interestingly, the color that best matched it was the exact color the walls had been in the old kitchen.

The amazing Liddy card was painted by a friend.  Another treasure - the card and friend :-).

Still room for the lamb cage :-).

And now we have a couple extra can lights...that have dimmer switches...that will be perfect for a baby night light ;-D.

We toyed with taking this whole wall out and combining the kitchen and dining room, but I'm glad we left it similar to the old design with a "window" looking into the dining room.  I love the flower lamps and the six small shelves were the contractor's idea.  Good call!

A sheep for Auntie Reg ;-).  The bottle she's climbing is yet another treasured gift from an artist friend. Look closely at the bottle.

So that's the ten cent tour of the kitchen.  Want to see the new dining room and bathroom?

How beautiful. I was wondering where the baby lamb cubby was and then you mentioned it. Is that a cat door? The colors are great too.
I have a seated gentleman in flannel pants with a bundle of sticks like your shepherd. Their faces are the same so probably by the same artist.

Just wow. Love the fact that it's designed with all the animals in mind, right down to the cubby for lambs. And the vinyl floor is spectacular. It looks like real hardwood in the photos. Would not mind knowing the specs on that. (Doesn't everyone need animal-friendly vinyl?)

That's a good question. The old kitchen didn't have drawer pulls, just notches underneath to pull them out. These don't have the notches, but are pretty easy to operate and I think I like the clean/blank look so might just leave them off.

Mostly eating out for 10 weeks makes me want to cook more :-o.

Elaine, that does sound like the same artist! The cat door goes into the laundry room, where the litter box lives ;-).

The flooring is Konecto Prestige Sunset. I originally saw it in a commercial flooring store. It had been their main floor for 8 years so I took that as a good sign.

Of course we want to see the rest. :-) :-)

This is just gorgeous! Still warm and friendly and kept the basic character but updated. You will come to love it. And you'll never have to do it again! Haha. Once you have some lambies running around to break it in you'll know it's still your house. ;-)

More, please!

Neat old shepherd you have.

I love this post, as I'm working on my kitchen right now. I have ordered my kitchen cabinets and they will be in, in a couple of weeks. But I haven't ordered the countertops yet. I have a quartz picked out that is grey in our house, but looks green in the store! I find it amazing how different colors look in different lights. And the floor I have picked out is called Luxury Vinyl Tile and it looks like an old wood floor. You can see a pic of it on my 'house construction' blog. I haven't ordered it yet but am pretty sure that is what I'm going with...and now, I will order an extra box for replacements! I think it's good you left the wall in. I have a lot of windows and doors in my kitchen, therefore, I don't have a lot of room for upper cabinets. If you would have taken that whole wall out, you would not have had room for the cabinets or those cute shelves. I like the shelves. I enjoyed this post Sheep Lady!

Love the pix! And love the care taken to provide places for critters too! Hard to locate designs that acknowledge those of us with critters!

What colour is that on the kitchen walls? Looks great!!!

Ruth said...

Yes, because wow, that is a beautiful kitchen! :D

I bet you can really cooks/take care of lambs in that kitchen! I love the green color and all your personal touches! Those wire bins on the wall gave me an idea:)

Oh, it's marvelous! I could move in tomorrow and not change a thing. So lovely. Good for you to have such a great place to toil!

That is GORGEOUS! "Good things come to those who wait." (Yeah, wait through hell, I know.)

A little dirt is good for a kitchen floor - it gives the room that "lived-in look". (Hey, no human over the age of two eats off the floor, and studies have shown that babies who aren't exposed to dirt are more likely to have allergies.)

Love the granite, love the cabinets, love the opening into the dining area, love the label on the wine bottle, love the cat/dog food receptacles, etc etc. Want to see more of House Beautiful!

Wow! Congratulations! Your remodel is absolutely gorgeous! I can see why you like the pull out bins for pet food; what a great idea and so convenient. I'd love to have your hanging flower pendant lights. They are so pretty compared to most of the ones I've looked at. Would it be possible to ask where they were purchased from? It is wonderful that you have your Grandmother's artwork on your stools. I had to "bigify" (I learned that word from your blog!) the wine bottle label to clearly see the artwork; I can see why you like it. I am so happy for you and Tim; the kitchen is really the heart of the home and your heart is beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing the reveal. I'd love to see more!

How beautiful! In our search for the perfect place I saw so many hardwood floors damaged by dogs claws. Ralph and I got a vinyl simulated wood as well and we love it, easy to clean! Ours is a little bit textured and not slippery.
This kitchen of yours is just going to be a joy for you and all around you!

Love your house! I bought the wood yesterday to make similar shelves either side of the sink for a late Christmas present for my daughter, so it was fun to see yours:)
