Yarn Along

This should really be the Vacuum Your House and Mop That Disgusting Kitchen Floor Along, but knitting in front of the fire while we get hit with another round of snow seems like a much "funner" idea ;-).

I'm almost ready to start the decreases for the top of the hat.  This has been a fun knit, a warm up for the Iknitarod.  We are following the Yukon Quest race.  If you have any interest in sled dogs, that Ravelry group is really good.  I've learned a lot and it's hard to not get caught up in the excitement!

I'm between books right now, so rather than cleaning the house or knitting, I'm actually browsing Audible, my a little bit guilty treat to myself.  I really should look into downloading books from the library.

I like a good story.  Nothing too nerve wracking or scary.  Funny is always good.  I need something light that doesn't require much thought since I'm listening while I work.  But not while I'm vacuuming.  It's hard to hear when the vacuum is running...which is why our house is so dirty ;-).

Any suggestions?

Joining in with Ginny (knitting and reading) and Frontier Dreams (crafting), another fun "Along" group.

The digital library is my friend. It's open even when the world is covered in obscene amounts of snow. I do have to be careful what I listen to while I knit/spin though, because every time I touch the finished item the book I was listening to while I made it will pop into my head. :-)

Have you listened to Catalyst by Anne McCaffrey and Elizabeth Ann Scarborough? It's a fun book revolving around animals. It is sci-fi, but it's what I would consider "light" sci-fi. I downloaded the audiobook from the library last year and enjoyed it.

That does it - I may be changing my Iknitarod knit to a Kate Davies. I just love her patterns and your hat is absolutely perfect - the colors are lovely. I listen to audiobooks all the time and I have to say that one of my all time favorites is an older one, 'The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society', which is read by several different people. Just loved it. Another favorite, 'The Art of Racing in the Rain' (good dog story). More recently, liked 'Yellow Crocus'. For non-fiction, 'The Worst Hard Time' about the Dust Bowl was really interesting.

I really enjoyed this audiobook: Au Revoir, Crazy European Chick by Joe Schreiber. It's a wildly entertaining young adult book. Not a topic that I would usually pick out but I loved it.

I've always enjoyed any of the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series by Alexander McCall. Great stories and all smile worthy and interesting.

Also, that hat is going to be a beauty!

I've read The Guernsey Literary and loved it. Had forgotten about Racing. Just downloaded it!

There are a lot of good young adult books that I never even think about. Good call!

OH, I LOVE those!!! Wonder if there's a new one out yet. His other series are good too, but can't beat No. 1 Ladies :-D.

I've enjoyed listening to A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman. Also Boston Girl by Anita Diamont. I love the hat you are knitting!

Just had a great catch up watching valentines day cookie distribution, featuring the adventure chickens, steaming snowy sheep, and your pretty hat in progress.

Well I love audiobooks for my drive to and from work, usually whatever stories I can find on CD at charity shops, yard sales and the library sale.

Some are 'true life' similar to the blogs I read, mainly themed around farming like 'Gaining Ground' by Forrest Pritchard, stories by Michael Perry including 'Coop' and 'Visiting Tom'. I like Jon Katz also (fiction and non fiction).

For comedy I'd recommend 'This is where I leave you' by Jonathan Tropper, was made into a film also and just released on DVD, we rented it from Redbox for the second time this week because we found it so funny first time around. There is a Janet Evanovich series 'Stephanie Plum' which is light and funny.

As I moved to the USA from the UK 8 years ago I have to give 'The English American' a special plug - it's by Alison Larkin, and is also funny, lots of running commentary by the main character about differences in use of the same words, British stiff upper lip attitude vs American friendliness etc.

Sometimes I enjoy a biography, of the recent ones I've listened to my favorite was UK veteran actress Dame Judi Dench, called 'And Furthermore'.

So you have plenty of suggestions to get started, let us know what you choose!

Ooh, both sound great!

More great suggestions! I LOVE the Stephanie Plum series. She just needs to write faster!

I love the quote at the top of your blog. It is a good reminder to enjoy life and slow down a bit. :)

Your colorwork is amazing! I cannot wait to see the finished project.

The hat is very pretty! Glad to read that I'm not the only one who can't get into vacuuming and mopping right now. Must be this tine of the year. :)

lovely lovely knit!!! it is hard to deal with winter and snow, my sympathies.

Have you ever listened to the Princess Academy and it's sequel? I was admittedly quite surprised at how good these are and the audible narration of it is like listening to a radio drama really, as each character has it's own narrator. The first one is great but the second one, which you *really* need to listen to the first one to understand all it's pulling off is just splendid.

I love Sue Grafton - I don't know what I'll do when she reaches Z....Amelia Peabody series is great if you like Egyptology. I would love to be able to knit with more than two colors. Maybe that should go on my next Knitting Big Step List.

I wonder if fiber people and other people who work with their hands are the ones who keep Audible in business? Commuters too I guess.

I've listened to a ton of great things. Right now I'm listening to the Outlanders series, because 1) people in the blogworld talked about it, and 2) it's LONG -- big bang for your buck! But I've also enjoyed The Martian (a guy who got stranded on Mars and had to make do. ha! excellent story. ), The Unbroken (about the olympic runner who survived WWII in a Japanese prisoner of war camp. I think maybe they just made a movie from it), Twelve Years a Slave (the book the movie was based on), The Secret Keeper, The Child Thief, I could go on and on. I'm the opposite of RussVerd. Everytime I think about a book, I remember the piece I was working on. :)

Yeah, um, that's what it is ;-D.

I'm only knitting with two colors! Each row only uses two colors, they just switch out every so often. You can do it!

Cannery Row and Sweet Thursday by Steinbeck - I'm longing for California and you've probably already read them. I love the hat and just started a beginning knitting class to find out what I've been missing all these years!!

I'm in the same place on my Peerie Floours and found the decreases for the crown a little challenging. Kate Davies has a tutorial that helped me a lot. I haven't done much Fair Isle, but really enjoyed this one. I can't believe no one has mentioned the Outlander books on Audible! Davina Porter narrates them and she is so good! Dianne@sheepdreams

My favorite series starts with the book, "The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie." A series by Alan Bradley about a young British girl.

I wouldn't be cleaning my house either if I had that gorgeous colourwork to knit! Come to think of it, I'm not doing my housework cause I am admiring all the Yarn Along posts!

No worries! It's confusing with two different "reply" links. Just go to the one all the way to the bottom :-).

I really like being able to respond to comments with the "new to me" format. Hopefully it's not giving everyone fits.

I remember thinking they were ingenious on the Sheep Heid hat, but that's all I remember ;-). Looking forward to working on it tonight!

I have a few. I finished the third book in the Mrs Polifax series and am in love with her. It was a great find through either Goodreads or Audible. I also have liked the Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes series by Laurie R King and the Charles Lennox series by Charles Finch. So glad you started this discussion.
