Who Cooks For You?

Normally we all try to get Auntie Reg to cook for us, but we were happy to watch and take some pictures of her guest chef on the hillside yesterday.  We didn't have any desire to eat what he or she was planning on cooking though ;-).

This is a Barred Owl who has been frequenting their back yard this winter.  They have an indoor viewing window, but I was happy to social distance outside and take pictures.  He or she let me slowly creep within 25 feet of the tree.  I stayed for a few minutes and then quietly backed away.

What a beautiful and exciting opportunity.  Thank you!

If you'd like to work an owl puzzle...

What a fascinating photo! A dozen mallards and a dozen mergansers have decided to check out our pond, but I can't get but within "tiny dots" distance from them to take a photo.

Barred owls have the famous "Who cooks for y'all" call - but they also have a bunch of calls that sound like a clown college gone very, very bad. When I worked for a county park service in Indiana, we had a grove of trees where a group of barred owls liked to winter. We'd bring night hikers there in the winter and watch people's reactions when the owls got going. Barred owls look so solemn, but they're really clowns underneath that sober garb.

I believe we are going to need to hear the "clown college gone very, very bad" but I'm afraid to google that ;-D.

I haven’t posted much lately but always enjoy your posts. Happy New Year. I really loved the video of the horse ride with the bells. Looked like so much fun.

Wow, what great photos! I read your title and I wondered why you were mentioning an owl call?

Now I know! They will call during the day, too.

One summer, when we were painting outside, the afternoon train would go by and blow their whistle.

That would cause the barred owl to start calling almost every day.

I agree about their crazy calls at night. I would call back to them at night from my 2nd floor bedroom window and they would answer me.

I think I was probably known as that "crazy owl lady" in town!

I love barred owls! Almost as much as barn owls. What a perfect setting in the
hollow of the tree. They seem to be a people friendly owl.
